Abba Lot went to Abba Joseph and said to him, “Abba, as far as I can I say my little office, I fast a little, I pray and meditate, I live in peace and as far as I can, I purify my thoughts. What else can I do?” Then the old man stood up and stretched his hands towards heaven. His fingers became like ten lamps of fire and he said to him, “If you will, you can become all flame.”
There’s an analogy between this story about the purpose of the spiritual life and being a professional and a leader.
Any spiritual or contemplative tradition has certain teachings, rituals, and forms that are taught to members. These are essential practices that lay the foundation for true spiritual growth. For Abba Lot, these are his daily Scripture readings, prayers, meditations, mindfulness, and the basic principles of ethical conduct.
These spiritual practices are like all the foundational skills that leaders need. Sometimes we call these “hard skills” – like doing budgets or reports, professional training, certification, or degrees you’ve earned, the ability to communicate well, following processes, etc.
In your career, “becoming all flame” is what happens when you learn to practice Centering for Wisdom. You learn to effortlessly harness the full power of your divine, inner core of wisdom. This empowers you to integrate your leadership skills and the power of your reason or intellect, with the inner capacity for human connection, trust, and compassion.
These are not “soft” skills – they may be somewhat less tangible, but you know when a leader has them – you can feel it.
The image of Abba Joseph stretching out his fingers to become all flame reminds me of the work of the Heart-Math Institute.
As the image shows, scientists can actually measure the electromagnetic fields and connections between the mind and the heart. And they’ve found that the heart is 100,000 stronger electrically, and 5,000 times stronger magnetically than brain.
They’ve also found a synergistic effect that occurs to your body’s energies when your heart and brain are aligned – or what they call “entrainment.”
When two waves are out of entrainment, they cancel each other out. When they’re entrained, they amplify each other.
In the graph above, imagine that Wave 1 is your brain, and Wave 2 is your heart. The Resultant wave is the interaction between the two.
The “Destructive” line is what happens to your energy when you’re out of alignment. You are literally resisting your physical and spiritual energies – they’re canceling each other out. You feel this as stress, tension, anxiety, and exhaustion.
The “Constructive” line is the sweet spot, where you are centered and in alignment. Now you are in the flow and synergy of the energies resonating between your head and your heart.
Centering for Wisdom is like the Heart-Math Institute’s image of physical energies radiating from your body, like Abba Joseph reaching out his fingers to become all flame!
You might feel that you’re not harnessing the full power of your heart – your inner core of divine wisdom – because of all the stress, anxiety, and overwhelm that is canceling out your energy.
